Description
Chaff Cutter
A chaff cutter is a mechanical or hand-operated agricultural machine used to chop fodder and other forage into small, uniform consistent pieces (straw, hay, Napier grass, maize stalks), pieces for livestock. This process, called “chaffing,” makes fodder more digestible for livestock like cattle, goats, and sheep, reducing feed wastage and improving nutrient absorption.
They minimize feed waste, improve digestibility, and enhance nutrient intake. Available in manual, electric, or petrol/diesel-powered models, they are vital for saving on feed costs and boosting meat or milk production.
Manual Chaff Cutters:
Hand-operated via a crank and fly wheel. These are budget-friendly and ideal for small-scale farmers with 1–2 animals. Suitable for very small farms with low budgets.
Electric Chaff Cutters:
Efficient and cost-effective for farmers with a stable power supply, ideal for smaller herds. Petrol/Diesel Chaff Cutters: Best for remote areas or large-scale farming, providing high capacity for cutting, often ranging from 400kg to over 4 tones per hour.
- Electric Chaff Cutters: Powered by electric motors (often 2HP to 5HP). Best for medium-sized farms with a reliable power supply; they are quiet and low-maintenance but less portable.
- Petrol or Diesel Chaff Cutters: Powered by engines (typically 7.5HP to 10HP). These are highly versatile and portable, making them ideal for large-scale operations or farms in remote areas without electricity.
- Tractor-Operated (PTO) Cutters: Driven by a tractor’s power take-off shaft. These have high output capacities (up to 2 tons/hour) for industrial or very large farm needs.
- Combined Chaff Cutter & Pulverizer: A multipurpose machine that can both chop fodder and grind grains (maize, soybeans) into fine meal for poultry or dairy feeds.
Blade Configuration: Most machines feature 2 or 3 heavy-duty steel blades. More blades or higher speeds usually result in finer cuts and higher production rates.
Capacity: Small manual units handle roughly 60–80 kg/hour, while high-speed motorized versions can process between 1,000 kg and 4,500 kg/hour.
Feeding Mechanisms: Advanced models include a conveyor belt or automatic rollers to pull fodder in safely and evenly.
