Milking House / parlor
November 6, 2024The milking parlor capacity needs to be calculated depending on the number of animals. There are different alternatives regarding the number of milking stalls and capacity required in the area. The milking parlors where the main functions of dairy farms are fulfilled must be able to provide continuous service with high quality. It is necessary to decide which milking parlor management is suitable for you by considering the farm capacity and growth regime. Proper drainage and ventilation are also essential
Milking parlor size and number of milking stalls
- Number of animals to be milked daily (Considering the final capacity in the future)
- How many times a day will milking be done?
- What will be the milking time of the total herd or a specific milking group?
- What kind of work routine do you follow?
- How many people will work in the milking parlor?
MILKING PARLORS SYSTEMS
Milking Systems are according to Milking Parlor Installation, Number of Animals and Milking Time Performance
- Bucket milking system is suitable for milking up to 40 animals
- Fishbone / Herringbone Milking System is suitable for milking up to 400 animals (Ex. 2x 12 = 120 milkers)
- Parallel Rapid Exit Milking System is suitable for milking up to 1,000 head animals.
- Rotary Milking System, in milking parlors with high animal numbers and work efficiency targets.
- Robot milking system (Ex. 1 robot for 60 milkers)
General assessment of the MILKING facilities
- To see if existing milking facilities are in good condition, look at the structure and roof. Ceilings may be low.
- Dark parlour: This will be unattractive to the cows and they will be slower to get from the collection area to the parlour and back. The milking time and the milking process puts a strain on the milker.
- Milking pit: is it deep enough? A shallow pit means the milker has to bend over, which can lead to back pain over time.
- There may be incorrect slopes or steps in the milk line.
- Proper drainage and ventilation are also essential
Management
- For a herd of 100 cows, there will be just over seven rows of cows to milk in a 14-unit parlour. Individual row times will be affected by the pre-milking routine and lactation stage.
- Milking unit: The number of units needed depends on the size of the herd. The aim is to milk seven to nine rows of cows; this will give a milking time of no more than one hour and 30 minutes.
- One milking operator can handle 14 units where cows are prepared (milk cleaning/stripping). When no preparation is done, one operator can handle 22 cows.
- The milking parlor building should be in the direction of the prevailing wind and downwind of other farm animals.
- The access road for the milk truck should be separate from any cow paths. This is to minimise contamination of the milk truck by manure.
Milking parlor comfort:
- It needs to be planned in a way that allows for easy entry and exit.
- You need to avoid sharp corners, U-turns and steps
- There should be no ups and downs or pits in the milking parlor.
- The floor must be dry, clean and non-slip.
- Mastitis can cause a number of problems such as poor hygiene and odor due to increased cell count and drainage problems.

Safe, Clean and hygienic milking parlors
The milking parlor is the most critical area of the farm because it is the area that is most associated with liquid (water, detergent and milk) and should always be clean and hygienic, as well as being an area where animals socialize the most and where the most pushing, shoving, scuffling, cow splits and separation injuries occur.
“Splitting” is when a cow has slipped on the wet concrete floors of a barn or splits under the bull and can sometimes not get up because her legs have split in opposite directions.
Less milking stress, shorter milking time, safe entry and exit, easy milk control, faster and more efficient milking with milking parlor floor coverings, as well as end milking stress with slip injuries!

KRAIBURG rubber cleaning in milking parlor
The floor in the milking parlour must always be non-slip and hygienic. Regular and thorough cleaning is necessary to prevent the growth of pathogenic microbes and to prevent the formation of slippery smear layers. That is why we have prepared a proven cleaning recommendation for KRAIBURG milking parlour floor coverings. The aim is to ensure good and permanent cleaning and hygiene as well as the long-term functionality of the rubber floors.
To fully exploit the potential of KRAIBURG rubber floor coverings, regular and thorough cleaning is necessary (comparable to technical maintenance. Equipment / machines). This ensures that the mats remain non-slip and ensure hygiene over a long period of time.
The objectives of the cleaning concept of milking area
- Permanent good cleanliness and hygiene
- Keeping cleaning labor and costs within reasonable limits
- Maintaining the function of the floor in the long term
Contamination falls into three categories:
- Coarse dirt: a mixture of manure and urine
- Mechanical cleaning with water› Push/rinse off coarse dirt› ideally use high-pressure cleaner.
- Organic pollution: manure, milk, oil, protein, immersion
- It is recommended to use alkaline foam cleaners› with high degreasing power, good dirt removing capacity
- Mineral pollution: limescale, rust, urine.
- Acidic foam cleaners should be used, they dissolve mineral residues, and are mostly materials containing disinfectants.
Tip: Apply the cleaning agent with a foam gun in a high-pressure cleaner
Cleaning routine recommended by KRAIBURG
- Daily: Clean the floor rubber thoroughly with high pressure water after milking.
- Every 2-3 weeks: apply foam cleaning, use alkaline and acidic foam cleaners alternately.
Create an individual cleaning concept
- Adapt to individual conditions, e.g. water hardness, type of pollution, …
- Developing a clear routine procedure (keeping a report/checklist)
- Apply regularly – important for hygiene and function
- Hygiene costs time and money, but / poor hygiene costs much more!
Before using cleaning agents, please note:
- Follow the instructions in the enclosed product/safety data sheet (correct use, dilution, exposure time, …)
- Wear personal protective equipment: safety glasses, gloves, apron, …
- Use substances that do not damage the material and check compatibility (rubber, zinc, milking equipment, …)
The following applies to rubber flooring in general:
- KRAIBURG rubber coatings have a very high resistance to cleaning agents (high-quality raw material from rubber granulate)
- Wastewater disposal: to municipal sewage treatment plant or in accordance with relevant legal provisions.
